CDS Exam Preparation in Chandigarh | 2027 Batch Enrolling
Plenty of graduates who’d make good officers miss the cut by a handful of marks. When we look at why, it’s rarely ability. They studied without a plan, ignored the SSB until the result came out, and never had anyone go through their mistakes with them. We teach the CDS at Paramount Defence Academy, Sector 34A, and this is what we tell students in the first week of the 2027 batch.
What the CDS is
Combined Defence Services examination is conducted by UPSC two times in a year for admission into Indian Military Academy, Indian Naval Academy, Air Force Academy and Officers’ Training Academy. You clear a written test first. After that comes the five-day SSB interview, and only then does the final merit list appear. For a graduate who wants a commission, it’s one of the few direct routes in.
Why the written test trips people up
Each test carries 100 marks, lasts for two hours, and deducts one-third of a mark for each incorrect response. In that case, there is no scope for guessing. For instance, it is quite easy for a student attempting 70 questions to score more than another student who tries all the 100 questions but fails in 25 percent of them. It is important to be well-prepared, meaning knowing how to avoid certain questions, identifying weaknesses using practice tests, not in the examination hall, and making time for SSB interviews.
Pick your academy before you pick your books
The IMA, INA and Air Force Academy exams have three papers: English, General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics. The OTA has English and GK only. Check the current UPSC notification before you commit, because patterns and eligibility do change.
This choice shapes your whole timetable. A final-year BA student who hasn’t touched maths since Class 10 can go straight at the OTA with English and GK. If the same student wants the IMA, maths has to start in week one.
English, GK and maths
English decides the cutoff more often than students expect. Read one newspaper editorial every day, and do error spotting, sentence improvement and comprehension in timed setsGK – Do not attempt to cram up information. Categorize your study in terms of history, politics, geography, science, and contemporary affairs, and revise once a week. In CDS mathematics, there are only Class 10 topics, and the important thing is knowledge of concepts and speed rather than smart solutions. Twenty arithmetic problems daily for a month will benefit you more than six hours of math on Sunday.
Start the SSB early
Many aspirants file the SSB under “later.” You can’t cram for it. Over five days you go through psychological tests, group tasks, a personal interview and a conference, and what gets assessed is how you think, work with others and handle pressure. That comes from months of habit. Someone who speaks in a group every week will find the group tasks natural. Someone who only read about them will freeze. The same goes for students doing NDA coaching in Chandigarh, since both routes end at the same SSB.
A simple plan
- Read the UPSC notification for age limits, vacancies and your academy’s syllabus.
- Take one full paper cold without having studied any topic to get an idea of your level.
- Prepare a weekly time table having separate timings for each subject, also for revision, and another for mock test.
- In case you feel you need some discipline and solutions to your doubts, then take a CDS batch. Know the credentials of the faculties as well as the size of the batch first. Solve the last five years of papers under exam conditions.
- Begin SSB habits now: read the news, exercise daily, speak in groups.
Mistakes we see every cycle
- Guessing freely despite negative marking
- Treating English as the “easy” paper and paying for it at the cutoff
- Buying six books when two or three, revised repeatedly, would do
- Reading a lot but never sitting a timed mock
- Leaving fitness until after the written result
