What Does CDS Recruit For?
The exam fills officer posts in four academies:
- Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun
- Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala
- Air Force Academy (AFA), Hyderabad
- Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai
Last cycle had around 457 posts. For CDS 1 2027, around 450 vacancies are expected, with OTA taking the largest share. The official number will be confirmed in the notification.
CDS 1 2027 Eligibility Criteria
You must be an Indian citizen and a graduate. The age limits below are expected, based on the previous cycle. Check the final notification for exact date-of-birth cut-offs.
| Academy | Age Limit | Qualification | Gender |
| IMA | 19–24 years | Any graduate degree | Male |
| INA | 19–24 years | B.E. / B.Tech | Male |
| AFA | 20–24 years | Graduate with Physics and Maths in 12th, or an engineering degree | Male |
| OTA (SSC Men) | 19–25 years | Any graduate degree | Male |
| OTA (SSC Women) | 19–25 years | Any graduate degree | Female |
Final-year students can apply too. You just need to show proof of graduation by the date UPSC mentions. IMA, INA and AFA candidates must be unmarried. There is no cap on attempts as long as you stay within the age limit.
How to Apply for CDS 1 2027
The form is filled online on the UPSC portal. Here is the process:
- Do the One Time Registration (OTR). Create your profile on upsconline.nic.in. If you have already done this for another UPSC exam, you can use the same profile.
- Fill in the application. Add your personal and educational details and choose your academy preferences.
- Upload documents. You need a recent photo, signature and a photo ID in the size and format UPSC asks for.
- Pay the fee. It is ₹200. Women, SC and ST candidates pay nothing. You can pay by net banking, card or UPI.
5. Choose an examination center and submit. The centers will be allocated on a ‘first come first served’ basis. Print out the confirmation form.
Most refusals occur due to minor mistakes; such as a misspelt name or date of birth on the certificate, a photo which is too blurry, incorrect size of the signature or non-payment of the fee.
CDS Exam Pattern
The written exam has different papers depending on the academy.
| Paper | IMA / INA / AFA | OTA | Time |
| English | 100 marks | 100 marks | 2 hours |
| General Knowledge | 100 marks | 100 marks | 2 hours |
| Elementary Maths | 100 marks | Not applicable | 2 hours |
| Total | 300 marks | 200 marks |
All papers have negative marking, one-third marks are deducted for each incorrect answer. After the written test is over, there comes the SSB Interview, which goes on for five days, carrying 300 marks for IMA, INA and AFA, while for OTA it is 200 marks.
English paper assesses comprehension, error detection, vocabulary and arranging of sentences. General Knowledge comprises of current affairs, history, geography, polity, economy and general science. Mathematics is confined to matriculation standard: Arithmetic, Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, Mensuration and Statistics.
Last Year’s Cut-Off (For Reference)
These figures are indicative written cut-offs from the previous cycle:
| Academy | Approx. Cut-Off |
| IMA | 120–130 out of 300 |
| INA | 115–125 out of 300 |
| AFA | 130–140 out of 300 |
| OTA | 95–105 out of 200 |
Treat these as a rough target, not a promise. Cut-offs change every cycle.
6-Month Plan for the 11 April Exam
Starting now, you have six months in your hands. Here is a plan that suits almost everyone:
• Weeks 1-8: Create the foundation. Study English Grammar, basic General Knowledge topics and all the chapters of maths starting from the basics.
• Weeks 9-16: Practice everyday. Do sectional tests and focus on the weak spots as well as current affairs daily.
• Weeks 17-24: Test and revise. Attempt mock tests in exam-like condition and rectify mistakes made in them.
• Entire Time: Think of SSB. Work on confidence, communication and decision-making skills early as the interview holds as many marks as the written test.

Importance of Coaching Classes
It is certainly possible to ace the CDS exam all by yourself. However, most candidates tend to waste time in the preparation process due to lack of proper planning. With an appropriate institute, this problem can be solved by studying according to a schedule, conducting tests and finding out your weak areas.
However, in a good CDS exam preparation course, this phenomenon is seen during the last 2 months.
The candidates who wish to prepare for the CDS exam with experienced faculty can opt for classroom and online batches. It is advisable to join an academy where practice, current affairs classes, and SSB counseling are all done in one place. Many Coaching for CDS aspirants programmes also give doubt sessions, which save a lot of time before the exam.
